Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

I want to leave the papers
piled so high on my desk
that I cannot find the top of it
I want to leave the dishes
so stacked up in my sink
that I cannot see the bottom of it
I want to leave my clothes-filled hamper
and the empty refrigerator

I want to leave my messy closet
the unswept leaves
in front of the house
the buttons that need
to be sewn on
the hems that need
to be shortened

I want to leave the unmade bed
the dusty shelves
the unpressed shirts
the unanswered calls
the unpaid bills
the unmopped floors
the unwashed windows
the TV that needs
to be fixed

Stop the world
I want to get off
at some other place
at some other time
where I can sit
without feeling guilty
about doing nothing
for an entire afternoon
